February is for Love & Laughter

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

img_0261February is definitely one of my favorite months. Both my sister (whom I perpetually trail after in an uncontrollable fit of laughter) and my husband (lovable, and deserving of adoration) were both born in this wonderful month - so, to my mind, it is fitting to devote  a day mid-month on which to ponder & commemorate Love.

I have never held back from expressing myself visually (though my Mother used to warn me about using my forehead and mouth with such extreme & frequent movement). I simply cannot help it. We are feeling beings, able to communicate through universal visual cues beyond language. I do not want to freeze my skin, so that you cannot discern my emotions. Grow old gracefully, yet with unrelenting emotion (just stick to our Anti-Wrinkle Serum)!

Grow Your Own

Xing Xing Doing Her Thing

Many of you have noticed this recent trend towards growing your own food. I am delightfully in the thick of this, having created a delectable organic garden. The newest addition is our recent acquisition - three lovely chickens. Cochin Bantams make great pets, as they are smaller than other chickens. For lunch and dinner, I visit my garden, pick some fresh vegetables. Soon, I will be able to wander over to see if any of the hens have laid new eggs (we have a few months yet). I am told that the eggs taste better from “home-raised” chickens. I like to feed them a mix of flax, chia, and sesame seeds with a bit of grated coconut. Imagine, like your children, knowing what they are eating, and having some control over this. What they ingest is what we ingest (please re-read this several times). Remember the saying, you are what you eat (and what you rub on your skin as well, of course, as we are porous)!

Aloe Inside & Out

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

We at Duchess Marden Love aloe, abundant in products such as our hydrating masque, aloe is a wonderful skin remedy! It soothes the skin, helps with collagen and elastin repair, heals scars, helps with sun and windburn, and relieves minor burns and skin irritations.

I recently discovered Aloe Vera “Tea in a Jar,” which is high in minerals (calcium and others) and vitamins (such as B), helps with internal cleansing & digestion, strengthens the immune system, and increases energy levels.

Summer Rayne Oakes & Duchess Marden Present to Teens Turning Green

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

ttgfinal2Teens Turning GreenOn a glorious sunny afternoon this past Saturday, Duchess Marden sponsored an event for Teens Turning Green/Teens for Safe Cosmetics with an awe-inspiring speech from Summer Rayne Oakes. She spoke about her career history, not only as a model on the fashion front, but as a model citizen with gumption. Her take away message: be steadfast in representing what you believe in. I was impressed to learn that she had turned away a six figure contract to represent a cosmetics company who refused to divulge their ingredients. She is earnest, and anything but opportunistic. You will undoubtedly enjoy her new book

I should be watching American Idol

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

img_0118My husband david and I after seven seasons just started watching American Idol. Instead of watching the season finale, I was working on our new blog. David said he would keep taking photos of me and posting them until I sat down with a cup of tea to watch Adam and Kris.
I think he is still just bitter that Danny Gokey, from his home town of Milwaukee lost out.
